Getting anyone to commit to a task long enough for it to become a habit is arduous in itself.
My students? I know they have a mind, will, and spirit of their own.
Given their personalities I thought of a few ways we could keep everyone motivated.
Exhibit A - Stovetop Timers
Having a makeshift alarm system that the entire household can hear is a form of accountability. To reinforce this practice, make sure you have a small incentive or reward system in place.
For example, if the timer is set for 30 minutes, it has to be material provided from their books or simply playing by ear.
Either way they're exercising their motor skills and that's what is most important. Reward system in place is entirely up to you. I find that acknowledgement and words of appreciation really go a long way in making this seemingly tedious task apart of one's daily routine.
I find that competitive spirit is most prevalent in our little ones, whether it's with themselves or their siblings.
Using chart paper (can purchase at Staples or any colour paper is fine), stick it up against a surface where everyone could see.
Everytime they sit down and practice, they have to write the date, time started and time practice ended. If they can do it once a day, every two, or at the most every three days would definitely be grounds for celebration.
To seal the deal, parents feel free to sign off on it, just as you would in their agenda.
Your involvement in making this a routine is essential to their learning
Knowing what to practice and how to practice is very important.
Often times I would have written the most recent dates in their books or notebooks.
